The Climate Action Reserve has initiated the development of a GHG reduction project protocol for coal mine methane recovery and combustion. The Coal Mine Methane (CMM) Project Protocol will provide a standardized approach for quantifying and monitoring the GHG reductions from projects at active underground coal mines in the United States that capture and combust methane that would have otherwise been vented to the atmosphere from degasification systems, including drainage systems and ventilation systems.
The Reserve is currently soliciting stakeholder interest in order to form the multi-stakeholder workgroup that will work closely with Reserve staff throughout the protocol development process. Representatives from industry, government, project developers, academia, verifiers and environmental advocacy organizations are all invited to express interest in being a workgroup member by completing the Statement of Interest form below.
CMM Stakeholder Statement of InterestPlease return completed forms to policy@caclimateregistry.org by Friday, March 20.
Below is a tentative timeline for protocol development. This webpage will be updated regularly as the process moves forward. If you have questions about the CMM protocol, please contact Rachel Tornek at 213-891-6930 or rachel@caclimateregistry.org.
